The airline Spanair has suspended its operations from last Friday night 27th January 2012, which means the cancellation of their flights, and is expected to present bankruptcy proceedings next week. Tens of thousands of passengers are affected and about 2,000 workers are likely to be unemployed.
As explained to Efe company sources, the bankruptcy will be the second step following the suspension of operations. The decision comes after the Government refused Friday to follow the airline after the failure of negotiations to bring a new member of its shareholders.
In a note, Spanair apologizes to users who are disadvantaged and justifies its decision “given the lack of financial viability for the coming months,” why” the company has decided to cease operation of its flights as a measure of prudence and safety, and take all appropriate legal action. ”
Spanair has coordinated with AENA and the authorities of the Ministry of Development to prepare a contingency plan in airports.
According to Public Works, Development notified the airline to cease its activities to 20.16 hours, but just after 23.30 hours, the ministry had no detailed plans to assist travelers beyond wards at the airports of Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona El Prat. In any case, has announced it will open disciplinary proceedings to the carrier immediately by the abrupt cessation of activity.
“It’s a case of infringement and, therefore, hypothetical penalty,” said Secretary of State for Planning and Infrastructure, Rafael Catala, quoted by Efe. According to the agency, the head has said that Spanair has caused irreparable harm to the people who had expectations of travel in the next days and have been frustrated in their plans.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Development has constituted a coordination committee in Barcelona and ongoing monitoring to ensure the rights of passengers affected. Aena said the suspension would start from 02.00 pm on January 28 (Saturday), although the Spanair statement said that “the last commercial flight” was going to land at 22.00 on Friday.
Users who were scheduled to fly with Spanair or had purchased a ticket for the coming days, weeks or months, have two phone numbers of company information: 900 13 14 15 (toll free) or 902 13 14 15. The website does not work anymore.
