The most popular avenue in Barcelona, Passeig de Gràcia, will hold the largest gastronomic space in Spain. This will be placed in what now is a car park which occupies 3,700 m2. This centre will be specialised in national cuisine, but it will also offer international food.
“El Nacional” (The National) is the name which has been chosen for this giant gourmet restaurant. It will cost 6 million Euros and it will create 200 new jobs. This large space is supposed to have a capacity for 770 seated customers.
El Nacional will show the Spanish cuisine to the visitants. Every day, food from all over the country, from the Mediterranean Catalonia to the southern Andalusia, will be able to be tasted by the customers. Both local and foreigner people are supposed to visit this gastronomic area, but probably tourists will be the majority due to its special setting: the popular Passeig de Gràcia.
From the late XIX century to the beginning of the Spanish War (1936), the setting of El Nacional was used as an exhibition gallery which gathered the most important Catalan people at that moment. After the War, it started to be used as a car park. Now this special underground place in Barcelona will regain the recognition it deserves.
