Created in the United States in 2003, the Green Meeting Industry Council (GMIC) is a nonprofit association with representation in over 30 countries (600 members), which promotes and ensures the sustainability in the organization of meetings and events through research and training. Work with partners to develop good practices and contribute to the development of sustainability policies and regulations.
The Iberian Chapter Iberian was born in 2011
Thirty professionals from the meeting tourism sector in Spain and Portugal as hotels, convention bureaus, DMCs, institutions, meeting planners met on 28th April at the headquarters of the Biodiversity Foundation of Madrid to create the Iberian Chapter of GMIC.
The meeting was chaired by Guy Bigwood, GMIC President International. The meeting approved the statutes of the association and chose Mary Canivell (of the OPC Event Lamar, Malaga) as Chairman and Pedro Rocha dos Santos (Estoril Congress Centre) as Vice President.
Four teams were built up: Communications and Marketing, Recruitment of new members, training, and financing, have already begun to take action for better implementation of the Chapter in the Iberian Peninsula and begin to develop the objectives of the association. The Iberian Chapter of GMIC is proposed as one of its primary goals to increase membership. For this purpose, and to raise awareness of the GMIC it is planned to organize regular meetings in different cities, which will include training sessions.

The GMIC offers its members a range of opportunities to advance implementation of sustainable events, such as:
1 .- Provide access to a global community of people sharing the best experiences, studies and business opportunities
2 .- Provide training in sustainability, and resources based on international standards
3 .- Support research and development of international standards for sustainable events.
