The numbers don´t lie, especially when it comes to official statistics. The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) states that Barcelona currently holds the 3rd position as the most visited business travel destination, just after Vienna and Paris. The city´s authorities, together with international entrepreneurs and local businessmen have invested time, effort and money to turn Barcelona into a MICE paradise.
A big part of Barcelona’s current success belongs to the hotel sector, which keeps on growing and generating constant income since 2008. According to Hosteltur (leading Internet portal about Spanish tourism) by the year 2014 there will be 60 new hotel establishments in Barcelona.
Catalonia closed the year 2011 with excellent numbers. The average hotel occupancy was equal to 75%, which means a 3-point rise compared with the year before. The average price per night was 106€. Those spectacular results have motivated builders and investors. Barcelona will end the year 2012 with another 11 brand new hotels, offering 766 rooms with almost 1,500 beds. It is important to mention the high standards and status of the new buildings: six of them are 4* and 5* hotels.
The hotel industry in Barcelona is definitely blooming and the upcoming years will enrich its actual status. Nowadays, the city counts with 64,876 beds, distributed in 33,250 rooms in 350 hotels. In 2013, 9 new projects with 908 rooms (mostly 4* hotels) will be finished. And even though we haven’t finished the current year, Barcelona’s investors and authorities keep their futurist vision and sign contracts for new hotels to be opened in 2014.
