Barcelona World is the name of a new 826 hectares resort to be built close to Port Aventura, a popular amusement park near Barcelona. The Catalan government announced on Friday the signing of an agreement with La Caixa bank and entrepreneur Pedro Bañuelos for the creation of a business and leisure complex which will feature more than 12,000 hotel rooms, among other facilities.
The resort will have six themed areas dedicated to six different countries or regions around the world: Europe, USA, China, Brazil, Russia and India. Each will have their own hotels, restaurants, convention center, casino and particular landmarks. According to Catalan officials, Barcelona World will require an initial investment of around 4.6 billion to open the doors. The opening is scheduled for 2016. It is estimated that the project will create 20,000 jobs.
The proximity to the airport of Reus, the AVE (high speed train) station and the ports of Barcelona and Tarragona have been a crucial factor to decide building the resort on these lands within 150 kilometres from Barcelona. Once completed, the developers hope to attract about 10 million visitors annually.
Building Barcelona World strengthens Barcelona as a global touristic destination reference. In fact, the lands aren’t within the township, but the developers have chosen to include the name ‘Barcelona‘ because they consider it a brand too valuable to not take it.
Barcelona World is projected to be a reference on hosting conferences and events. Nevertheless, nowadays the Catalan capital already offers a wide variety of services and infrastructure to accommodate all types of corporate meetings and incentive trips. To learn more about Barcelona as an ideal destination for incentive trips, you can visit DMC Barcelona or E&TB Group websites. On both sites you will find a large number of activities and events that you can organize in Barcelona.
There is no doubt that the construction of Barcelona World will be a major boost for the tourism industry in the city. However, Barcelona already become on the last 20 years a DMC reference destination on its own merits.
